Joyful Coffee // 즐거운커피
I know it’s been a while but I’m back. And I have a new favorite cafe.
At this point I have visited a lot of cafes in Daejeon. But a lot of the places I visit to write about for this blog, I don’t go back to.
즐거운커피, however, is a new favorite. As someone for whom the word “joyful” most literally means quality coffee, Iron and Wine playing in the background, minimal yet cozy aesthetic, and incredibly delicious chocolate chip cookies, this cafe checks all my boxes and then some.
Located in Galmadong off the main road a bit it is very easy to miss. The first time I went it was especially hard to notice as it was night time and very quietly nestled between the lights of a noraebang sign and a hair salon.
The biggest give away is a small blue bike and little sign that says, “Joyful coffee makes a joyful life.” Truer words have never been spoken.
The first time I came here, last Friday night, I had every intention of taking pictures for a blog only to pull out my camera and realize that I had left the battery on the charger at home.
So I headed back again this afternoon with another friend. And I fell in love with it even more.
The interior is very simple. The perfect medium between that sterile vibe that a lot of industrial style cafe’s here give off, but also not over the top like it’s trying too hard to be the next big Instagram photo hot spot.
It is exactly my style. If I ever opened a cafe I’d want it to look like this.
The other thing that “pretty” cafe’s are also usually lacking in Korea, ironically, is decent coffee.
But 즐거운커피 checks that box again. Both times I’ve gotten the coffee of the month and it has been excellent. Included in their menu is also a short page with information about where the current batch of beans are from and a bit about the flavors.
They also have, as I mentioned before, the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had in Korea.
Good coffee, good atmosphere, good music, good people (the owners were so lovely) all that adds up to equal my happy place. A lot of the cafes I visit are in Galmadong but this one is definitely my favorite so far.
Basically I’m in love with this place. I will absolutely be back here soon and 100% recommend 즐거운커피 to anyone in Daejeon.
Let me know if you check this place out!
